For the Medical Profession:

This story is related to the 2006 HOD Resolution "Nursing Practice, Chemical Exposure, and the Right-to-Know". The resolution addresses the need to update and reform our nation’s inadequate policies regarding chemical exposure. Note that DEHP, a phthalate (as discussed in the above report) linked to reproductive birth defects and other illnesses, can leach from PVC medical devices (e.g. IV tubing). Health care facilities are still using devices that contain DEHP even thought Non-DEHP alternatives are available. The “Hazardous Chemicals” web page ( http://nursingworld.org/coeh/chemicals.htm ) of the ANA Center for Occupational and Environmental Health will link nurses to resources where they can find Right-To-Know information about DEHP and other hazardous chemicals to which they and their patients may be exposed, as well as resources/tools to assist nurses in taking action to create a safer chemical policy.
